A Community’s Call for Help

A joint initiative of Himalaya Projekt (Germany) and the Nepal Himalaya Sherpa Foundation (Nepal)

In the village of Khijidebma, Okhaldhunga, the local monastery has traditionally played an important role in preserving the community’s Buddhist traditions, spiritual practices, and cultural heritage. Following the devastating 2015 earthquake, the monastery was destroyed and many monks left the area, making it increasingly difficult for the community to continue its religious traditions and pass them on to younger generations.

Recognizing the community’s need, Himalaya Projekt and the Nepal Himalaya Sherpa Foundation joined forces to help rebuild not only a physical space, but also an environment where children can receive an education while remaining connected to their cultural and spiritual heritage.

From Temporary Shelters to a Permanent School

In 2023, the project began with the construction of four to five temporary shelters, providing children and staff with a place to live, study, and continue daily activities. Since then, continued support from donors has helped cover essential needs such as food, accommodation, clothing, staff salaries, and daily care.

Today, construction of a permanent monastic school is underway. The new facility will provide a safer and more sustainable environment for education, accommodation, and monastic activities, while serving the long-term needs of the local community.

Supporting Children and Their Future

The school currently supports around 20 boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 15, providing free education, accommodation, meals, clothing, and daily care.

Two dedicated caretakers play a central role in the children’s daily lives:

  • Kunsang Lama – caretaker who helps prepare meals, supports the children in their daily lives, and teaches Buddhist principles and traditional practices.
  • Ang Kaji Sherpa – caretaker and lead teacher who provides general education and helps ensure the children receive a balanced learning experience.

More Than a School

The Kilkhording Monk Community School is more than a construction project. It is an investment in education, community, and cultural heritage.

With the continued support of donors and partners, we hope to complete the permanent school, provide a safe and nurturing home for the children, and help ensure that the traditions and values of Kilkhording continue for generations to come.

Your support helps provide a child with education, food, shelter, and a connection to their heritage.
